But after the 2008 financial crisis and recession, his boss lost the construction business, and Stefano lost his job. That’s when he became homeless. Stefano talked about being from Germany, having a sister who he thinks is in Paris but they don’t stay in touch. To him, one of the worst things about being homeless is the rain. “Snow is okay and even heavy rain but the misty stuff, that is the worst, it just soaks through everything,” he said. The police make sleeping outside difficult. “When you finally fall asleep that’s when they come and wake you up, asking you a bunch of questions and you just have to tell them to piss off.” Stefano hates the shelters, says they are dangerous and doesn’t want to get robbed.
